In 1780 Mozart received a long-desired commission for an opera from Munich. For ›Idomeneo‹ he had ideal conditions: an exciting libretto, high class singers and the best orchestra in Germany at the time, for which he wrote grandiose instrumental music. It comprises of the grueling conflict between human passion and divine law in peak Sturm und Drang style. 30 years later, Beethoven contributed with equal enthusiasm his music for the Vienna premiere of ›Egmont‹, the tragic drama of his highly adored Goethe. A fireworks of musical drama that finds blissful closure with Haydn’s last symphony full of energy, power and visionary poetry.
