El Fuego

Cantoría

The young Spanish vocal quartet Cantoría, one woman and three men, was founded in 2016 during their studies together at the music academy of Barcelona. The ensemble’s core repertoire lies in the music of the Iberian Peninsula from the 16th century, in the time of the counterreformation. “El Fuego” (the fire) is the title of their guest performance in Brühl, for which the quartet brings instrumental accompaniment: three musicians playing the organ, viola da gamba and Vihuela, a lute-related Spanish string instrument from the 15th century. “The art of the Iberian Mediterranean is full of the contrast between fiery and devotion” according to the Catalan singers. “The music and the literature of the ‘ensaladas’ of the Iberian Renaissance will be our gateway to this world. Through the music of some of the most excellent Spanish songbooks preserved throughout history, Cantoría approaches to the souls of women and men who experienced vividly the fire of love and sin.”
