Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach never personally met one another. But once Bach became familiar with the music of Vivaldi, it made a lasting impression. Bach gained important insights from Vivaldi’s music, not least of all for his work on the “Brandenburg Concertos,” the fifth of which will be heard in today’s program. Bach did have a personal connection to the four years older Georg Philipp Telemann: Telemann was godfather to Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel. In order to present this repertoire, the G.A.P. Ensemble, one of the most exciting young chamber music groups in Germany, has expanded into an orchestra.
